Vaishno Devi Yatra: A First-Timer's Guide

The Vaishno Devi trek from Katra is about 13 km each way, on a paved and well-lit path, manageable for most people without serious trekking experience — but it still takes planning.

Registration

A free yatra slip is compulsory and collected at Katra before you start. This is a straightforward counter process, not an advance application, but it does mean building in time at the start of your trip.

How to cover the distance

On foot takes most people 6–9 hours round trip including darshan time. Ponies and palkis (a seated carrier) are available for those who prefer not to walk the full distance, and helicopter services cover the Katra–Sanjichhat sector for a faster option — though seats sell out quickly in peak season.

When it's busiest

Expect significantly longer queues around major Hindu festivals and the summer holiday months. If you can travel outside these windows, the experience is noticeably less crowded.

What to carry

Comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket (it gets cooler higher up), water, and any personal medication. Lockers are available at the base camp for bags you don't want to carry.
