Pahalgam

Best time: March to November Altitude: 2,130 m

Pahalgam sits where the Lidder River splits, surrounded by pine forest and open valleys that have made it a base for Kashmir's trekking routes for decades. It's also the traditional starting point for the Amarnath Yatra each year.

Betaab Valley and Aru Valley are short drives from the main town and make easy half-day trips — both are open meadows with the river running through, good for walking rather than serious trekking. Chandanwari, a little further out, is the road-head for trekkers heading toward Sheshnag and the Amarnath cave, and also has a small snow patch most of the year.

Travel tips

  • Private vehicles aren't allowed into Betaab Valley and Aru Valley beyond a certain point in peak season — local shared taxis cover the last stretch.
  • Pahalgam is noticeably cooler than Srinagar; carry a light jacket even in summer evenings.
  • If you're combining Pahalgam with the Amarnath Yatra, check the official yatra dates and permit process well in advance — it's managed separately from general tourism.
